Kicks for Kids Program Gives Away Shoes to the Boys & Girls Club in Hollywood
On Thursday, March 26, Orange Bowl members and staff along with representatives from Baptist Health South Florida and TD Bank handed out shoes to 50 South Florida youths as part of the Orange Bowl “Kicks for Kids” program at the Carver Ranches Boys & Girls Club in Hollywood, Florida.
Since 2011, “Kicks for Kids” has provided local children and teens the opportunity to participate in and reap the rewards of sports and exercise by receiving a pair of quality athletic shoes. Together, the Orange Bowl and the South Florida community have been able to collect close to 15,000 pairs of new or moderately used athletic shoes and sneakers including nearly 5,000 this past year.
“Baptist Health South Florida and the Orange Bowl both strive to enrich and care for the welfare of Miami-Dade and Broward residents,” said Patricia Rosello, Chief Executive Officer of Baptist Outpatient Services. “We are happy to support the Kicks for Kids initiative to encourage South Florida’s underserved youth to stay healthy and fit through the donation of athletic shoes.”
This year’s program launched in October and ran through January. The response from the South Florida community made this year a success. Shoe donations were dropped off at Baptist Health South Florida and TD Bank locations. Schools from Miami-Dade and Broward County participated in a challenge with the top collecting schools receiving grants. Residents and local organizations also provided donations.
"TD Bank believes strongly in investing in the areas where we live, work and play and we are proud to be a sponsor of the Kicks for Kids effort that will provide assistance to many children in our local community," said Ernie Diaz, Regional President, State of Florida, TD Bank, and an Orange Bowl Committee member.
For the third consecutive year, In Jacob’s Shoes cleaned and restored gently worn shoe donations. The organization received a portion of the donations, a financial contribution as well as a plaque of appreciation from the Orange Bowl for all its efforts.
In addition to the Boys & Girls Club of Broward and Miami-Dade Counties and In Jacob’s Shoe’s, pairs were also donated to Family Central Inc., a child care resource that serves more than 100,000 children, families and child service providers in South Florida.
“It’s great to see how much the Kicks for Kids program has grown in a short period of time and how many have benefitted from it,” said Orange Bowl Member Larry Gautier. “One of the Orange Bowl’s pillars is supporting youth, and “Kicks for Kids” allows the Orange Bowl to do that while advocating a healthy lifestyle. A quality pair of athletic shoes will hopefully encourage all these children to participate in sports or go outside and play. The Orange Bowl is grateful to the sponsors, volunteers and South Florida residents for helping us make an impact in the lives of these families.”
